House Swap

Wednesday, July 14, 2010
We love to travel! Who doesn’t, right? Balazs and I used to travel a lot but due to our busy schedule, lately we haven't had a chance do so as much as we would like to…But that is something we are working on! For the past few months or so I keep hearing about house swaps. As much as I love my place and I don't want strangers in it, I find this whole idea perfect in many respects. You not only get a taste of the real life in that city you visit, but you don’t have to pay for a hotel or a rental property, so this really allows you to spend the money you saved on delicious dinners, shopping, gallery tickets and city tours. I think that next time we decide to travel somewhere we will give it a try and see...Some of my friends would be very nervous about this, but I feel I can get a good sense of the other person through their emails or calls. Sometime it is good to be a bit adventurous.

What are your thoughts on that? Have you done a house swap before?

Hugs,
xoxoxo

Ps: That photo is of the famous Oia sunset in Santorini (Greece). What is your next destination?

Sorry for all the self promoting on your blog this morning BUT
I looked into housing swaps a few years ago and came upon an organization that my husband, monkeys and I have been part of for about two years- It's not for everyone but we LOVE it-

This picture is beautiful! Someday when I am older I hope to travel all over Europe. :)

I have never heard of a house swap...but it sounds really interesting and adventurous, which is a good thing.

I've always been curious about house swapping. Of course, my apartment in Uptown Dallas is not much of a vacation spot ;) BUT I loved the idea when seen on the movie, "The Holiday"!

Love the image, btw... I'd like to go there!!

Sara- I love the Holiday also! Haha!

I think it's a really cool idea. And I agree, sometimes you can tell what a person is like before you meet them. Just give your most personal/expensive items to a best friend or family member to keep for you, and have a blast!

Santorini, LOVE Santorini, never been there yet but it's somewhere on top of my wish-to-visit list. When being a child we did a house swap, in our own country, the Netherlands.
Have a lovely lovely evening, sweet sweet Diana xxx

I was so lucky to have experienced an Oia sunset on m honeymoon...it was amazing :)

I am on the fence with the house swap idea... I would go to someone else's house, but I don;t know if I would want a stranger in mine...??

I was just talking about this idea to my mom the other day! I think it's a great idea. But, I would feel uncomfortable to let someone stay at my house I think. Hmmm, it's food for thought.
I hope you are having a lovely day! xo

I love the idea of a house-swap - it's funny I was talking about this yesterday! I would do it when I'm older (and have a house, obviously!). I would looooove to go to Greece. In two weeks I'm off to the French Pyrenees, Spain and then back to Southern France. I cannot WAIT xx

I went to Santorini years ago and it was fab - would love to go to Greece again someday. As for house swaps, I hear they can work really well but, personally, I'm not sure about letting strangers into my house. Certainly a good way to economise, though!

I think it's a great idea and I also love The Holiday! xo

I haven't ever done it before but would be so completely game for it!! Hey, if you come across a good house-swap website, will you let me know? I'd love to check out what's available and how it all works! :-)

What a beautiful photo - is this Santorini? I'd love to get there some day.

I keep hearing about house swaps. While i'm not quite ready yet, someday i'd love to try it.

I wonder about House swapping too. I think it's so adventurous and I hear of many people doing it. I think I may feel funny about someone in my space...but maybe not. Hmmmm...

I've definitely considered it but never actually did it. If someone in Santorini was willing to house swap with me I will be all for it! :)

I love the idea of going somewhere and staying in an authentic place, but man... the idea of someone in my home (potentially going through my stuff or being mean to my cats) gives me the creeps...

Naina said...

haven't done it but I am open to it. I would love to go back to Santorini and just hang there for a week.

Debby said...

I haven't but it seems fun ~ what was that movie w/ Cameron Diaz and ? (Kate Winslet)? when they swapped houses? It was a cute flick! I would stay in a cardboard box if it were in Santorini! xo

oh wow.. i thought it only happened on tv and in movies!!! seems like a fun and neat idea, but can be a bit unsafe and scary.. exciting still though.. teehee! :D

For a chance to spend a rent free summer in greece, I'd do it. But I don't know what I'd do with my dog.

I dream of going to Greece one day!

I've never tried house-swapping, but my friends and I have looked into something similar at www.couchsurfing.com. It's basically the same principle, except you would be staying at other peoples' houses and you wouldn't have to worry about strangers being in yours. (:

Lady Grey said...

I'm with you on that, I don't think I'd want a stranger living in my place. My privacy is really important to me... then again, it would be an adventure!

Lisa Lisa Lisa said...

I think it is such an interesting concept. I appreciate that you posted about this! I sort of had a similar experience with house sitting this summer. The owners met me first and called references. Maybe that is something you could do? Landlord or character references. Very interesting.

Kristen said...

I wouldn't mind house swapping, it sounds kind of fun! Like the movie the Holiday. I could go to Europe and someone could come enjoy the south! (I think I would be the getting the best out of everything though, heh).

That photo has me swooning. The Greek Islands (any of them!) is probably number one on my "places I want to visit" list. I think I'd feel comfortable with a house swap--I'm sure there are precautions you can take, and maybe even services that insure you/your property and match you up with people?

Biana said...

I've never done it. But I don't know if I would, because I don't know if I would like strangers to be in my house and go through my personal belongings. Also I'm a bit obsessive compulsive. Everything has to be in its own little place.

Lana said...

Would love to and most definitely to Santorini, it's one of my favourite places ever!

Krystal said...

It's funny, my friend and I were just talking about this - It would definitely make me nervous, for sure - but I think I would try it, especially if I had a lot of information on the person and had a good feeling about it

i have thought about this doing a house swap many times. i think when the hubby and i get to the empty nester stage we might just do it!

Jess said...

Hahah - I doubt anyone would want to stay in my house in Indianapolis (not really a vacation spot!!) but maybe someday when I own a house on the beach ;)
Love the idea of it!

Ooh, I think we could do that....not a bad idea, it would leave more money for other things as you said :)

Love the image!!

Tamara Nicole said...

Ooooh I would be all for that, but my hubby is super safe and careful and there's no way he would! Lol

We just went to Santorini last July, LOVE that place!!!

Oh no! I live with two other roommates and we have a really rigorous screening process for potential roommates, even just for a short period of time. It wouldn't work out, but it is a nice idea.
